My favorite game by Rareware. Yes, Goldeneye now looks like
a foggy Legoland, but at the time it was a revolutionary experience. In 1997
there was only one game that let you stack 20 remote mines to explode on
command, shoot a smiley face into the wall, and run over some poor bastard with
a tank. This was unprecedented depth for a console shooter. The levels were
also remarkably varied, from escaping a doomed train rigged to blow up, to sneaking
around the Siberian Tundra with a sniper rifle. Of course, the biggest
attraction had nothing to do with the campaign… it was all about the
multiplayer. While other games like Halo and Timesplitters improved upon
split-screen gaming, Goldeneye is where it all started. For me, nothing was
better than beating your friend even while he had the golden gun. Just
remember, picking Oddjob is cheating.
