While the first Sonic set up the foundation for the series,
Sonic 2 threw in everything but the kitchen sink. There may have been Sonic
games after this second iteration, but it was never surpassed. The standard
rules still apply here: run as fast as you can to the goal post and defeat Dr.
Robotnik. It’s not rocket science. What makes this the definitive Sonic is,
quite simply, the levels. Whereas Sonic 3 and Knuckles are broken up and feel
disjointed, Sonic 2 feels like the total package. From the electric Casino
Nights to the forgotten Aquatic Ruins, Sonic 2 gave Sega fans a visual treat.
Tails also made his debut here, and thankfully, he doesn’t talk.
