31. Nights into Dreams (Saturn)

So, Sonic Team never made an actual Sonic game for their 32 bit console, the Sega Saturn. Instead, they made a game about a jester trying to save the dreams of some kids from an evil wizard. While Sega probably made mainstream gamers confused, true fans gave Nights a chance. Certainly unorthodox, Nights will have you flying around both 3d and 2d planes, while zooming through loops at breakneck speeds. You can use boosts and the “paraloop” to link points together in quick succession. Flight is so fluid, that it feels like you’re swimming in a pool of cool water. Nights is a game made back when major developers still took a gamble on something original.
